VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs opened the 2023-24 Thoroughbred race season on Friday night with a nine-race program that featured a pair of $100,000 stakes races. Fans were treated to the Gold Cup and the Magnolia Stakes. Both events were for Louisiana-bred runners going seven furlongs. The Magnolia featured fillies and mares.

The Gold Cup featured heavily favored Touchuponastar, who was gunning for third win in as many starts at Delta Downs. His last appearance in Vinton resulted in a rousing victory in the $150,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship back in February.

Touchuponastar did not disappoint by coming through with a 5 ½-length victory and it could have been even more. After breaking sharply under jockey Tim Thornton, the eventual winner cruised to an easy lead and carved out fractional times of 23.75 seconds for the opening quarter mile and 47.61 for the half-mile. As the field of eight made the turn for home Thornton shook the reins and his mount responded, going on to a dominant win over Big Chopper while Autumns Strong Man finished another 3-3/4 lengths behind the runner-up.

The final time for Touchuponastar, who is trained by Jeff Delhomme, was 1:24.64. Each race on the program was contest over a fast track and with near perfect weather conditions.

Touchuponastar has now won eight of 11 career starts and has banked a total of $468,100 for his owner, Set-Hut LLC (Jake Delhomme). His win in the Gold Cup was worth $60,000.

A colt by Anchor Down out of the unraced Half Ours mare Solo Buena was purchased by Noble Oaks Farm for $90,000 to top Thursday's Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association's Breeders Yearling Sale.

Hip 131 is a full-brother to the stakes-placed Swot Analysis and a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Free Drop Maddy (Free Drop Billy). The top three yearlings in the sale were all sold by Clear Creek Stud LLC, agent.

A total of 120 yearlings sold for a gross of $1,306,100, an average of $10,884 and a median of $6,000. There were 40 RNAs.

There is plenty to look forward to in regards to Racing in Louisiana. The Evangeline Downs 2023 Thoroughbred Meet concluded on Saturday, August 12, 2023, having achieved increases in total handle of 25% and increases to per day handle of 75%. In addition, average daily overnight purses increased from approximately $130,000 in 2022 to over $175,000 in 2023. This represents an increase of about 35%. Likewise, the upcoming Thoroughbred meets at Delta Downs and Fair Grounds are expected to produce increases to handle and overnight purses with estimates of $210,000 per night at Delta Downs and over $310,000 at the Fair Grounds.

GUITARTUITION PLZZ  raced 7 1/2 furongs on the grass at Louisiana Downs to a 1 1/4 length victory. He tracked mid-pack then slipped through on the inside to clear the field. The 4-year-old gelding is homebred for  Thomas L. Holyfield and is trained by Shane Wilson.

The LTBA Board of Directors voted to make changes to the Louisiana Breeders Awards Schedule at their August 8, 2023, meeting.

Breeders Awards for accredited foals by Louisiana domiciled stallions and out of Louisiana domiciled mares are being increased to 25%. This change will be effective October 1, 2023, for races run in Louisiana.

All other awards will remain at the current percentage level.

CARLOS PUNCH sprinted to his 3rd win - again at Louisiana Downs. Racing 6 1/2 furlongs, he dueled from the start and won by a length. the 6-year-old has 2 wins and 2 seconds already in 2023.  He is trained by Jervon Broussard for Debra McComas.

Dale Barras' homebred filly DAT GUITAR sprinted mid pack then closed with good energy 3 wide to win going away in a 5 furlong MSW at Evangeline Downs. He is trained by Peter P. DeRousselle.
 

6 year old gelding GUITAR SLIM won his 10th! He settled along the rail then found racing room inside and cleared just in time for the win by a neck going a mile and 70 at Louisiana Downs. Recently he ran third in the Louisiana Bred Premier Gentlemen Starter Stakes. He is now owned by Blick Stables and trained by George Allan Bryant.

Racing 7 1/2 furlongs at Evangeline Downs. WOOD RIVER settled behind horses at the beginning rhn had to handle some traffic before breaking through for the win by a head.  He was red by Virginia Lazenby Racing Stable LLC.

On the same card, CARLOS' BLAST trained and owned by Scott Gelner, liked the winner's circle so much, he repeated to win his next start following graduation. He was bred by Michelle LaVoice.

Making his 57th start, 8-year-old gelding BORN AGAIN GEORGE went to the lead, dueled and won for the 13th time - this one at Hawthorne. While we do not often report on efforts other than a win, we felt it was worth mentioning that Star Guitar’s son, Touchuponastar, became the fourth Star Guitar progeny to add Graded Stakes placing credentials to his name when he finished second in the Grade III Steve Sexton Mile at Lone Star Park on Memorial Day. Touchuponastar broke from the far outside and hustled to get position out of the gate. Vying for the lead in the run down the backstretch Touchuponastar took the lead turning for home but could not resist the closing rush of the winner Frosted Grace. Earning a 110 Equibase Speed Figure for his effort Touchuponastar has now earned $408,100 having never been worse than third in ten career efforts. I SEE CLEARLY NOW was the first winner for his sire Clearly Now. He won at Delta Downs by over 4 lengths last fall. He was claimed out of that race by owner/trainer Mark Hibdon. He has not been off the board in any of his 2023 starts leading up to today's win in the Baxter Stakes at Fonner Park. SKIPPA sprinted to a MSW win at Louisiana Downs. He got off a step slow, saved ground on the rail, found a seam along the rail, slipped through, and won by a neck. Jonathan Charles trains him for owner John W. Richard. The breeder of record is Rebecca Farms LLC.

Scott Gelner owned ad trained CARLOS' BLAST (Custom for Carlos) graduated at Evangeline Downs. Racing 6  1/2 furlongs he was forwardly place, dueled around the turn and shook clear for the win. He was bred by Michelle LaVoice.

GALLANT STAR  added win # 6 to his stats and the 3rd win for his new owner/trainer Robert Husak, Jr, Racing 6 furlongs at Louisiana Downs, he circled the field and galloped off with the win by over 9 lengths. His breeder is Brittlyn, Inc.

Racing 7 furlongs at Evangeline Downs, TENSAS BERTIE rated initially and then moved wide to gain the lead and then repel a stretch challenge to graduate by 1/2 a length. She is trained by  Brett A. Brinkman for the Cantrell Family Partnership and breeder Curt Leake.

CARLOS PUNCH sprinted to his 2nd win - this one at Louisiana Downs. He stalked the pace, dueled mid-pack and then cleared between horse for the win by a neck. the 6-year-old has a win and a place already is 2023.  He is trained by Jervon Broussard for Debra McComas.
 

Sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs at Evangeline Downs, CAJUN CARLOS stalked the pace and then came wide around the turn to draw off for the win by 2  and 1/4 lengths and his graduation. He is a homebred for Randy J. Granger who is also his trainer.
 

Stakes placed at 2 in the D. S. Shine Young Futurity. At 5, SCHNELL is still winning ( his 7th) after dueling and clearing for the win racing 6 1/2 furlogs at Evangeline Downs. The gelding is a full brother to grade 2 winner Minit to Stardom. Afternoon Deelites' death follows his owner Burt Bacharach's recent passing.

AFTERNOON DEELITES spent the majority of his stud career at Clear Creeks
Just six days after the passing of his owner Burt Bacharach, Afternoon Deelites, a six-time graded-stakes winner, was euthanized Feb. 14 at Old Friends, the Kentucky-based thoroughbred retirement farm, due to complications from colic. He was 31.

ROCK STAR ALEX raced 7 furlongs on the dirt to graduate at Louisiana Downs last fall. Today racing a mile at th Fair Grounds, he stalked the pace in 2nd and took over at the 3/16th pole to win by 1 1/4. CLEAR AS A BELE got off to a slow start in his first time out of the gate but caught on fast and as the chart caller saidm he blitzed up the inner rail, negotiated more traffic and cleared for the win. TENSAS VIRGINIA was claimed by Karl Brobeg and End Zone Athletics last summer and has been on the board for them every start since. Today she sprinted 5 furlongs at Delta Downs to score her 3rd win. She was hustled from the gate, chased, cleared and won by 4 lengths,

The Twentieth Edition of Louisiana Premier Night welcomed racing fans with low humidity, cool temperatures and clear skies, and although there were stars shining in the sky, the equine stars excelled on the track. Those were the Star Guitars running first and third in the Louisiana Premier Night Matron and first and second in the Louisiana Premier Night Championship.

MR. CROMWELL was 2nd first out last month and got his cap and gown today racing 6 furlongs at the Fair Grounds. He pressed the pace in 4th then cleared in the lane and held sway. He is trained by Shane Wilson for owner Wayne T. Davis and was bred by James M. Pratt Jr.

Delta Downs hosted its richest program of the season on Saturday evening as the 20th edition of Louisiana Premier Night took center stage. The 12-race program featured 10 stakes races and $980,000 in total purse money for Louisiana-breds.

 TOUCHUPONASTAR moved up to engage the leader and put him away to win the LA Bred Premier Championship Stakes. TOUCHUPONASTAR is no stranger to the winner's circle, having won his last 3 stakes races plus an allowance race. Last year at 2, MARKS PROMISE  had a buzz on the backstretch as he went off the favorite as the only horse in the maiden field without a prior start. He did not disappoint and went right to the lead and smothered the field by 10 1/4 lengths. Back in allowance company, he won again and now he grudgingly gave way and ended up 2nd in the LA Bred Premier Prince Stakes to add his first black type. MARKS PROMISE Is trained by Karl Broberg for owner Mark David Hixson. He was bred by  Southern Legacy Thoroughbreds, LLC.

LITTLE ROCKER went right to the lead and dueled determinedly to the wire to win by a neck racing 6 furlongs at Oaklawn Park. He is a hoembred for his trainer Randy L. Morse and co-breeder Randy Patterson.

Racing 6 1/2 furlongs in his 2nd start, CARLOS'S MAMA pressed the pace, took the lead, lost it in the stretch, and restarted to regain the lead and win by 2 1/2. The 2 year old gelding is trained by  Dwayne Breaux for owner Gene Cox. He was bred by Steve E. Holliday.

BORN AGAIN GEORGE added win #12  racing 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt at Hawthorne and driving through on the inside. He upped his earnings to $184,49.   The 7 year old gelding is now trained  by  Pat Clay for owner Eric Ramaekers. He was bred by Keith Hernandez, Earl Hernandez & John Duvieilh.

There must have been cheering in the Floyd and Renee. Pitzer household as their homebred and trained filly CUSTOM DESIGN wired the field to win in her second-lifetime start. She shook free to win by 5 lengths after dueling early. She raced 6 furlongs at the Fair Grounds.
 

Two-year-old gelding CLEARLY WAR was the only horse in the field without a prior start. He broke on top and dueled his way to a wire to wire win to break his maiden in his first start sprinting 5 furlongs at Delta Downs.  CLEARLY NOW is trained by Kenneth L. CHICKIETOWN STAR  sprinted 5 furlongs at Delta Downs to a huge maiden win. He raced close up inside then took the lead and sped off to graduate by 6 3/4 lengths for trainer and co-owner Winston Cormier. He is also owned by Russell Mire and was bred by Brittlyn, Inc.

BITSY'S CUSTOM C sailed to a  6 3/4  length wire to wire victory to win his 3rd race ridden out and wrapped up. He raced 5 1/2 furlongs at the Fair Grouds. BITSY'S CUSTOM Cis a homebred for Rose C. Hernandez & Earl Hernandez  and is trained by Sam B. David, Jr.

Racing a mile of the dirt at the Fair Grounds, DEMON HUNTER went off the favorite and did not disappoint. He ranged inside in fourth and then made his way up the rail to win by 3/4 of a length. We would like to thank everyone that attended Clear Creek Stud’s Annual Stallion Presentation. I think everyone enjoyed the event, the food, and the chance to see and visit with others in the industry. MYLIES STAR got up late to get her head in front and graduate by a head racing a mile at Delta Downs. She is trained by  Alvin Dussette

CHARGED TEMP won her last start at Delta Downs - her 3rd - and was claimed by End Zone Athletics Inc (T: Broberg). She has won again - her 4th and her 3rd in a row. Her new connections have to be very pleased!

Making his first start racing 5 furlongs at Delta Downs, CUSTOM CRESENT dueled every step of the way to win by a length. He is trained by Jonas Gibson for owner Courtney Barousse Equine Enterprises, LLC and was bred by Georgia Farms Inc.

On the same card, making her second start, CUSTOM CANDY raced 5 furlongs to a wire to wire win by a head for trainer Eduardo Ramirez and owner Susan K. Love. She was bred by Wayne Love.

THE BLACK STRAT broke his maiden in February of this year and found the winner's circle again wiring the field racing 1 1/16th at Turf Paradise. Since then he has raced at Mountaineer, Hawthorne, and Presque Isle. Back at Turf Paradise today he again wired the field for a win in an AOC going a mile. He is a KY bred trained by Marcus J. Racing a mile on the dirt at Delta Downs, TRINITY HOPE circled the field and broke her maiden by 2 lengths. She is trained by  Juan A. Larrosa for owner Jason S. Guidry and she was bred by Brehon Farm 

PHILLY WINS is back at Delta Downs from Canterbury Park and Hawthorne and added win #3 racing 7 1/2 furlongs on the dirt in allowance company. She raced just off the pace, was headed and fought back for the win She is now owned by End Zone Athletics and trained by Karl Broberg.

SW BEHEMAH STAR (winner of the Star Guitar S. earlier this year) had a bumping match with a leading rival in the Scott's Scoundrel Stakes at the Fair Grounds and then was outf9nished by a closer and had to settle for the place. O/B-Brittlyn Stable, Inc.; T-Jose M. Camejo. 11: 4 - 2 - 2   $156,790

OVA CHARGED loomed at then rallied to win the HAPPY TICKET S by 2 lengths, It was her 4th victory in  row with 3 of them in stakes company. the wire to win by improved her career record Ova Charged improved her career record to 7 - 6- 1 0and earnings to $264,600 for Evelyn Benoit's Brittlyn Stable. Jose Camejo trains the filly, whose lone defeat was a runner-up finish in the Victory Ride Stakes (G3) over the summer at Belmont Park.

Following her is 2nd was SPIRITED BEAUTY from the same connections who chased but had to settle for the place.  She upped her earmnings to $209,290.

GUITAR SLIM  is on a roll winning his 8th race  - his 3rd in a row!. He raced forwardly going a mile at Delta Downs and cleared for the 2 1/4 length victory. . 'TDN Rising Star' and three-time Grade I winner Jack Christopher (Munnings–Rushin No Blushin, by Half Ours) has been retired from racing and will stand in 2023 alongside his sire at Coolmore's Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His introductory fee will be $45,000.

A total of 65 stakes worth a combined $8.5 million, up more than $700,000 from last season, will be offered during Fair Grounds's 80-day, 2022-23 Thoroughbred meet, Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots announced Tuesday. In each of the 13 unrestricted, non-graded stakes, purses have been increased by $25,000. In addition, 12 new Louisiana-bred stakes have been added to the schedule, including six over the first two days of the meet.

TEXAS YEARLING SALE: The top-selling colt was Hip 60, a Louisiana-bred colt by Take Charge Indy offered by the Clear Creek Stud consignment. Mansfield Racing was again the buyer, acquiring the colt for $90,000. Hip 60 is out of the multiple stakes-winning Half Ours mare All Woman

A month later he scored his first allowance win stretching out to a mile and 70.  He saved ground then slipped through to clear the field. The 3-year-old gelding is homebred for  Thomas L. Autumn Hills La Bred  CUSTOM BOBBY'S enjoyed the move to Monmouth Park and won his first start there. He followed that up with a win at Belmont racing 6 furlongs on the turf and undergoing multiple challenges to win. He is owned by Robert Guidry and trained by Jose M. Camejo.

LA Bred TIMELY RUCKUS was a long way from home at Assiniboia Downs when he broke his maiden for trainer Shelley Brown and owner Oslen S Belle and Shelley Brown. SPIRITED BEAUTY got her 4-year-old season off to a good start with an allowance win going a mile and seventy at the Fair Grounds. She initially broke through the gate and endured a rough trip but got the job done for trainer Jose M. Camejo and owner/breeder Brittlyn Stable, Inc. Today she wired the field going 6 furlongs at the Fair Grounds and crossed the wire 7 1/4 in front wrapped up.

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association revealed its divisional champions for the 2021 racing season, which encompassed on-track achievements and leaders in the breeding realm.

Award presentations will be made at the organization's annual awards banquet, which is scheduled for June 11 at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La. The state's 2021 Horse of the Year will also be announced at that event.

Half Ours was named the state's stallion of the year. The late son of Unbridled's Song stood at Clear Creek Stud in Folsom, La., prior to his death in a paddock accident in July.

He saw 57 winners from 96 starters in 2021, for earnings in excess of $2.1 million. His runners were led by Standing Perfect, who notched victories in the LA Bred Premier Prince Stakes and Louisiana Legacy Stakes, both at Delta Downs. He also sired stakes-placed runners Our Lost Love, Aw Shucks, and Jimmy Two Times

Stakes placed at 2 in the D. S. Shine Young Futurity, newly turned 3 year old,  SCHNELL raced 6 furlongs at the Fair Grounds to draw off to win in allowance company.  Brittlyn, Inc. homebred BEHEMAH STAR  trained by  Jose M. Camejo won in allowance company in November, was 2nd next out the following month and today won again to end January with an easy 5 length victory .  BEHEMAH STAR  has won 50% of his starts

SW JIMI'S A STAR, past winner of the Pelican Stakes, was third in a prior running of the LA Bred Premier Championship Stakes.  He ran 3rd again this year after closing willingly from far off the pace. He is a homebred for James A. Boyd and is trained by   Henry B. Johnson, Jr..

Making her 3rd start, BOX FULL OF PICTURES drew off to an easy 7 3/4 win in a MSW going 6 furlongs at the Fair Grounds. She is homebred for  Brittlyn, Inc. and is trained by Jose M. Camejo.

SPIRITED BEAUTY got her 4-year-old season off to a good start with an allowance win going a mile and seventy at the Fair Grounds. She initially broke through the gate and endured a rough trip but got the job done for trainer Jose M. Camejo and owner/breeder Brittlyn Stable, Inc.

PICKNNGRINN was bred by Jacquelyn J. Rich DVM & Gerald Rich and the 6 year old horse is now trained by  Miguel Angel Silva
for Thumbs Up Racing, LLC. Racing 6 furlongs at the Fair Grounds, he wired the field for win # 6.

Last year at 2, MARKS PROMISE  had a buzz on the backstretch as he went off the favorite as the only horse in the maiden field without a prior start.
